    find the 1st derivative, let it equal zero and solve. this will give the stationary points. find the 2nd derivative substitute the stationary points into the 2nd derivative to determine their nature. f''(a) > 0 minimum f''(a) = 0 horizontal point of inflexion f''(a) < 0 a maximum
